What’s up with my chervil?

The herb garden is going from strength to strength with one sad exception – the chervil has been struggling from the start.

Although it came out of the pot green and sprightly it almost immediately began to turn purple and then white and barely grew.

And it didn’t put off these guys.

There was a strong stalk in the middle that gave me hope and with a bit more research I think the issue could possibly be the sun. Chervil favour dappled shade, and although we are in England the garden is very sheltered and recent weeks have been hot.

The chervil’s position on the lower right hand side of the herb garden is probably one of the most intensely sunny spots in the garden.

The chervil has now been uprooted, potted up and placed in a shadier area. We stripped all the unhappy leaves and hoped it would have a resurgence. In his place I bought a lovely dill plant from Columbia Road flower market – a herb that supposedly loves the sun.

I must admit he looked seriously droopy the day after being planted and has revived somewhat with a decent watering. Some of the leaves are worryingly yellow though… maybe that spot is just cursed.

I’ll keep you up to date on the chervil’s progress!
